Peugeot has unveiled plans for its latest light car model - the Peugeot 208 hatch.

The fifth generation in the French marque's '20X' range, the Peugeot 208 is expected to feature updated styling and the "floating grille" that currently appears on the Peugeot 508 sedan and wagon.

According to the car manufacturer, the Peugeot 208 has been developed with focus on prestige design and higher-quality materials, while the car weighs in at 170 kg lighter than the outgoing Peugeot 207.

A 1-litre VTi model will include a three cylinder petrol engine and be available in both five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, while a 1.2-litre variety will also be available in Europe.

The car is also set to feature Peugeot's e-HDi micro hybrid Stop and Start system and fuel consumption is expected to be as low as 3.4 litres per 100 km.

Speaking to The Motor Report, Peugeot Australia's Kirin Tipping stated that the Peugoet 208 could be launched domestically later in the year.

The car goes on sale in the Europe in June.
