After releasing a teaser video earlier this week, Peugeot has revealed details regarding the new Peugeot 208. The hatchback will be the successor to the current Peugeot 207 small car, and offers a roomier interior and a larger cargo space.

According to the manufacturer, the Peugeot 208 will also be approximately 200 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, making it one of the lightest cars in the small car segment.

In Europe, the model will be offered with a pair of 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre petrol engines, with fuel consumption as low as 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

Three diesel engines will also be offered - each equipped with Peugeot's e-HDi Micro-hybrid systems - reducing the fuel consumption by a further 1.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

Peugeot Australia spokeswoman Kirin Tipping told the Sydney Morning Herald the car is under consideration for Australia, where the Peugeot 207 is a strong model.

"We are still in discussion regarding specifications and pricing, however we are hoping to be able to do a 'in the metal' reveal in Sydney at the Motor Show in October," she says.
